Brunch after the New York Marathon—the lone runner at our table broke 3 hours, so we made it to the restaurant just before the kitchen closed at 3:15.
Rosa Mexicano’s brunch menu describes Huevos Ahogados (Drowned Eggs) as eggs Benedict with chipotle-Hollandaise on black bean masa boats, accompanied by a pomagranite mimosa.
The highlight of the dish was the chipotle-Hollandaise, nicely spiced and textured.
The eggs were an unfortunate combination of overcooked and cold, and the beans and crispy masa boats were fine but generally unmemorable.
More memorable was the service—despite the kitchen closing and the rest of the restaurant emptying out, we were able to have some delicious post-brunch guacamole made fresh at one of the numerous avocado stations around the restaurant, along with a late dessert, which arrived with congratulations from the kitchen: an impromptu marzipan and chocolate plaque reading “Felicidades.”
